Jubilation As St. Charles Borromeo Hospital Marks Golden Jubilee Commissions International Nursing School. -The Hospital Is The Best In South East - Health Minister

It was a celebration galore at St. Charles Borromeo Hospital Onitsha when the cream of the society gathered to mark the 50th anniversary of the reputable hospital.

            The historical event which was splendid indeed recorded the presence of the Chief Shepherd of Onitsha Archdiocese His Grace Most Rev. Valerian M. Okeke, the auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha His Lordship Most Rev. Denis Chidi Isizoh, Governor Obiano, erstwhile governor of Anambra State Chief Peter Obi, Minister of Health Prof Hassan, Anambra State Commissioner for Health Dr. Joe Akabuike among others.

            Part of the celebration was the official commissioning of St. Charles Borromeo International Nursing School Onitsha. Also a foundation stone was laid for the priest’s house under construction at the hospital.

            Speaking at the Holy Mass that kicked off the occasion, the proprietor of the hospital Archbishop Val described the celebration as thanksgiving to God, stating that the effort, the vision of the founder Archbishop Heerey of the blessed memory are not in vain.

            He also poured encomiums on Anyaegbunam family from Ontsha for donating a large portion of land to the Church where the hospital situated now. Other family he appreciated was Obinanazonwu for donating land in the time of Late Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Lutz asserting that with that singular gesture, Onitsha started witnessing modern development. The Prelate revealed that the hospital provided succor to many people during the Nigerian Civil War. He also eulogized Archbishop Ezeanya and Archbishop AK Obiefuna both of the blessed memory for their ever green contributions towards the growth and sustenance of the hospital.

            Archbishop Val in a special way rained accolades on the former governor Chief Peter Obi for remembering the mission hospitals by giving them grant in aid during his administration, remarking that his successor Gov. Willie Obiano has already started consolidating on that same gesture, adding that the church and the government are now partners in progress especially in education and health care delivery. The Chief Shepherd also praised the hospital manager Fr. Daniel Ogoo Onuorah, describing him as an ebullient, hardworking and dynamic priest who has made an indelible mark in the transformation process of the hospital. He called on everyone to cue into the new vision of the hospital which the celebration has provided.

            Governor Obiano who was represented at the occasion by the state Chief of Staff Prof Joe Asike in a speech at the occasion said the church especially Catholic Church is in the forefront of bettering the society through primary care delivery.

            He described Borromeo hospital as one of the best among equal, adding that the government is ever ready to partner with the church, so as to extend health care delivery to the hinter lands.

            The Minister of health Hassan who was represented by CMD Nnamdi Azikiwe University Prof Ibuegbe in a remark rated St. Charles Borromeo as the best in the South East urging the management not to relent in their commendable health care delivery.

            Chief Peter Obi who also addressed the gathering said he decided to partner with the church during his administration because government failed in her responsibilities, positing that it was the church that is assisting the government in providing quality education and primary health care delivery. He called on the government of the day to allow the church to be completely in charge of education and health sector since they have the potential to manage those sectors very well.

            The hospital manager Rev. Fr. Daniel Onuorah in appreciation eulogized the Archbishop Val for supporting the hospital both financially and otherwise, adding that his usual magnanimity is taking the hospital to an unprecedented height. The manager was also thankful to the past and present administrations in Anambra, stating that their good will to the hospital will never be forgotten in a hurry.

            Highpoint of the event was presentation of merit award to the staff of the hospital who have put in many years of service to the hospital.

            Other individuals who had contributed largely to the sustenance and growth of the hospital also bagged the prestigious award.
