The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Dr Barr Mrs Uju Nwogu, has  stated that Governor Chief Willie Obiano has so much passion for the youths and their living healthy and fulfilling lives hence the organization of this workshop. She then called on youths not to allow themselves to be ravaged by HIV/AIDS, noting that the youths are the future of this country and that once the youths are destroyed, the nation is destroyed.

The Commissioner made this call at CANA House Awka, in a one day sensitization workshop organized for youths and athletes in the state by the ministry. In her speech, she urged youths to be careful and conscious of the existence of the HIV/AIDS scourge and charged them to consciously prevent the progressive invasion of HIV/AIDS on the youths so as to minimize its negative effect on youths and sports development in the state and the nation generally. That all should know their HIV/AIDS status, hence the provision of free test facility in this workshop.

"HIV/AIDS scourge spread among the populace mostly as a result of ignorance. It is my hope that by the end of this workshop, the participants must have been sensitized enough on the cause and prevention of HIV/AIDS and adequately equipped to play a role in the current fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS which has negatively affected the economy of this great nation ", Dr Nwogu said. She also pointed out that the main thrust of the workshop is to arouse the consciousness of youths and our sports men and women on the reality of HIV/AIDS and urged them to as much as possible, share the Information and knowledge acquired in the course of the workshop with others who are not privileged to attend.

In their separate interviews, the Special Adviser  to the Governor on Youth mobilization, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and the Chairman  National Youth Council of Nigeria, Anambra chapter, Comr. Frank Mmaduka  (JP), asserted that it is important that youths are educated on the prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), especially HIV/AIDS, noting that it is one of the major enemies of Nigerian youths which according to them, is faceless.

In the different lectures delivered at the workshop, some of the resource persons Mrs Uche Ezenri, Mr Kingsley Hart, Dr Ndidi Ofole and Dr Chijioke Ogbagha advised the  youths not to look down on themselves if they test HIV positive and urged them to be conscious of their status. According to them, our youths must be healthy for us to have a healthy Anambra State and Nation. Particularly, in her lecture titled: MAKING PRO CHOICES; A Safer Sex Approach to STIs, Teen Pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS Prevention, Dr Ndidi Ofole, of Department of Counseling and Human Development Studies, University of Ibadan, admonished youths that they have right to say "NO" to premarital sex amongst so many other things which lead to contacting of the disease.

In his speech, the Traditional Ruler of Ifitedunu, HRH, Igwe Dr Emeka Iluno, charged youths to engage themselves in e-commerce and mobile business instead of whiling away their time surfing the Internet looking for unpleasant and meaningless sites which will not yield anything meaningful to their lives, but rather destroy them.

This teaching on HIV/AIDS for the youths will be a continuous process, so as to get to all nooks and crannies of the state. The youths that attended this workshop were drawn from the 21 LGAs and the different youth organizations in Anambra State.

In appreciation, a participant, Nkem Chinenye from Achalla, Awka North L. G, appreciated the conveners of the workshop noting that it has helped her know more about things she needs to do to avoid contacting this dreaded disease.

Highlights of the occasion include, lectures from different resource persons, inspection of quarter guards by the Commissioner, free HIV test, BP and diabetes tests amongst others.
