Gov. Obiano Doles Out N367m To Mission Schools -Re-Affirms Commitment In Support Of Mission Schools

Of what have become a working partnership between the Government and the Church especially in Educational sector, the Government of Anambra State under the administration of Chief Willie Obiano (Akpokuodike Global) has on Tuesday  May 17 2016 once again demonstrated and strengthened his commitment in ensuring that education in Anambra State thrives and sets the standard that will be difficult to match by presenting a cheque of Two hundred and seventeen million Naira (217 million) to the Catholic Archdiocese and other dioceses in Anambra State which is strictly for execution of UBE 2015 projects in schools under the management of the mission. This followed almost immediately a similar gesture granted to the Anglican Mission at Ekwulobia that same day where a cheque of one hundred and fifty (150) million  Naira was presented to them.

            It was a day filled with joy for the Catholic Mission as the Shanahan hall section of the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity Onitsha was filled to the brim with Bishops including, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Chidi Isizoh, the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka diocese, Most Rev. Hillary Okeke, the Bishop of Nnewi diocese represented at the occasion, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma, also represented at the event. Others are teachers, students and pupils of schools that gathered to play host to the governor of Anambra State Chief Willie Obiano.

            In his address, the ASUBEB chairman Chief Nzemeka Olisah appreciated the efforts and the commitment shown by the governor in improving the educational sector of the state. He further stated that it is important to observe that under UBE 2013 and 2014 project, the state has constructed 291 classroom blocks containing a total of 1,164 classrooms, renovated 218 classroom blocks containing a total of 1,090 classrooms; fenced four schools for security; provided 6 apartment toilet facilities as well as 11,423 pupils 2 seater desks donated to schools in   the state.

             Earlier in his address the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha Most Rev. Valerian Okeke extolled the governor describing him as a first class candidate in everything he does. He further stated that the gift of Governor Obiano is a blessing to Anambrarians because he loves education and never wants any child to be left behind.

            Speaking at the occasion, the commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha commended the exploits of the catholic mission in education stating that partnering with the Catholic Mission especially in education has produced wonderful results adding schools and students from Anambra have started winning national awards in internal and external examinations. Describing the governor as an excellent leader that wants the best in education, Professor Kate affirms that this administration has extended its benevolence in education to the physically challenged through disbursement of funds to support the procurement of their study materials, disbursement of Laptops and other benefits courtesy of an Australian foundation partnering with the state government in Education. She further disclosed that Anambra state has excelled in so many international competitions in recent years including Don FA Essay Competition, INTERSUBEB Essay competition etc. The teachers she said are not left behind as Gov. Obiano pays salaries as and when due; provides flying boats for easy transportation of teachers in the riverine areas. According to Professor Omenugha, the education Ministry of the state is fighting tooth and nail to ward off miracle centres and make the students understand that they can actually read and pass exams.

            In his speech the Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano commended the initiative of Chief Peter Obi the erstwhile Governor of Anambra state in handing over schools to the Mission. The Governor stated that the criteria for the disbursement of the funds to the mission is purely based on the number of schools at the disposal of each denomination during the handover of schools by his predecessor.

            He further extolled the Catholic Mission for their strides in education and for their proper management of fund which was made visible by the report from ASUBEB that audited the previous funds.

            Appreciating the Governor, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka, Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye described the Governor as a leader with a human heart. He stated that the managers of schools under the Catholic Mission are being warned never to joke with the money given to them by the government. He further prayed for more blessings upon the present administration.
