The 2nd Onitsha Archdiocesan Synod has begun. The Synod billed to commence with a General Session from 22nd to 28th May 2016 was convened by the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev Valerian Maduka Okeke with the theme, "New  Evangelisation in Onitsha Archdiocese, Renewal and Commitment".

The 2nd Onitsha Archdiocesan Synod is coming after the 1st Synod was convened in 2005(10years ago)by the incumbent Archbishop.

Already, the Synod Planning Committee headed by the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha, Most Rev Denis Isizoh have finalized arrangements for hitch free deliberations just as hundreds of delegates from within and outside the Archdiocese of Onitsha have started arriving.

Briefing Archbishop Valerian Okeke on logistics and other issues bothering on smooth conduct of the Synod, the Auxiliary Bishop informed him that adequate provisions have been made for accommodation, feeding and security of the delegates.

According to Bishop Isizoh, adequate arrangement was made for transportation and other necessary materials that would be used for identification of the delegates.

He disclosed that the venue of the Synod at the Shanahan Complex, Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha is under special security surveillance to protect the delegates some of who will fly in from distant lands.

All the delegates he pointed out, would be identified with special tags and the seats placed with identification numbers tallying with those on the tags.

Addressing the Synod Committee members, Archbishop Valerian Okeke expressed gratitude to them for sacrificing their time to attend meetings of the committee to deliberate on various aspects of the preparation.

Speaking on the essence and importance of the 2nd Onitsha Archdiocesan Synod, Archbishop Valerian Okeke said "the 2nd Synod will take us back to our roots and as we do,we will come out as new creatures."

The Archbishop said the Archdiocese of Onitsha has a good reason to be a model diocese with some of its enviable strides in evangelisation East of the Niger.

He acknowledged that the church has many challenges but the church he maintained, cannot do less than what the predecessors have done.

He described the foremost missionaries as "people of discipline and faith" who sacrificed a lot, including their lives for the good of all.

The Archbishop tasked the faithful to see the Synod as a period of "rebirth and rethink "about mundane issues of life and queried the faithful on the need to build mansions without building on the things of God."If you build mansions and do not know God, they are like empty mansions", he pointed out.

"Christ came that we may have life and we're only here to continue with his work", the Archbishop stated.
